Three scams in Sweetwater County that have recently surfaced have caused the Sheriff's Office to issue an advisory about them. Detective Dick Blust says the first is a variation of the “Advance Fee” scam and comes from a company calling itself “Claim Management” in Montreal, Canada.
Blust says the victim is told in the letter to not cash the check until they contact the “home office,” at which point they are asked for around $2,000 in order to cover “processing fees” or taxes of some sort.
Blust says at least one Sweetwater County resident has been victimized by this scam. Blust warns that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. No processing fees will be charged by a legitimate company for such services.
