Rock Springs Police Warn of Scam

The Rock Springs Police Department reminds citizens to be wary of claims of lottery winnings received by mail and e-mail. The latest scam being investigated by the Rock Springs Police Department is nothing more than another slant on “check spamming,” an attempt to obtain information on checking accounts;

The Rock Springs Police Department has become aware of local citizens receiving mail from Guaranty Trust Inc notifying citizens they have won a lottery due to participating in an International Market Survey. Citizens receiving this letter are notified they had lucky number drawn in their names and are entitled to collect $250,000 payable by certified check. Citizens receiving this mail find a check for just under $4,000 enclosed. The letter indicates this check is to cover taxes, insurance, and shipping for the certified check they are to receive.

The check issued is of fairly good quality, but a close examination of the check shows it does not have the security features advertised on the check. The check is fraudulent.

As with many check spamming frauds the originating company is international. In this case while the letter shows an address it also shows an address in London, England. The phone number listed for the citizen to call is in British Colombia, Canada. In this case, Guaranty Trust Inc was a stock firm in Toronto, Quebec, but is no longer in business.

Local banks have warned against cashing these checks as the funds will eventually be recovered by the bank from the person cashing the fraudulent check.

The Rock Springs Police department warns: If you didn’t specifically enter a contest you probably didn’t win. The old adage still applies, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
