The Bureau of Land Management Rawlins Field Office is excited about a proposed wild horse ecosanctuary located about 30 miles west of Laramie. Serena Baker says that Deerwood Ranch would be the one of its kind in the country and could serve as a model for others.
The BLM has opened a 30 day public scoping period prior to preparing an environmental analysis. If the proposal is approved, the BLM would sponsor the ecosanctuary at a funding level comparable to what the Bureau pays for the care of excess wild horses on long-term pastures in the Midwest.
The hope is the ecosanctuary will eventually become self-sustaining, saving taxpayer dollars. Comments will be taken at the Rawlins Field Office through May 1st.
