The severe drought conditions have prompted the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to issue a warning to hunters that pronghorn antelope, especially in the Lander area, will be lower in numbers this season. Green River Information and Education Specialist Lucy Wold says that even species associated with mountainous terrain, such as elk and deer, have been effected.
The main culprit is the habitat. Wold says that they are seeing sagebrush plants that are losing their leaves and are in poor condition due to lack of water. If conditions do not improve, the effect may be felt well into the future.
Officals say that hunters and outdoor enthusiasts can show additional compassion this season by not camping near waterholes which will reduce the stress on wildlife and give them a better chance of surviving this drought period.
