Wyoming voters face decision on hunting amendment

Wyoming voters will decide in November's general election whether to amend the state constitution to specify that the opportunity to hunt, fish and trap will be preserved. Sponsor State Sen. Larry Hicks, a Baggs Republican, says passing the measure will memorialize the importance of Wyoming's hunting heritage. He notes the state has named cities and counties after famous hunters and trappers such as William "Buffalo Bill" Cody and William Sublette. Hicks also says passing the amendment will ensure future generations in Wyoming never have to worry about bans against hunting certain species, which have been enacted in California and elsewhere. Critics of the proposal include Sen. Cale Case, a Lander Republican. He says there's no real threat to Wyoming's hunting traditions and says the state shouldn't clutter up its constitution.
