Officials expect Big Piney High School in western Wyoming to remain closed at least through the weekend after a mercury spill was discovered in a storage room next to a chemistry classroom. School officials do not believe mercury vapors that spread through the school after Wednesday's spill posed a health risk, but they decided it would be a good idea to prevent any further exposure to students and staff. The person who called authorities said about 6 ounces of mercury had spilled. Short-term exposure to high levels of mercury vapor can cause lung damage, vomiting, rashes and increased blood pressure.
