Federal prosecutors say a former CEO accused of defrauding hospitals in Wyoming and Indiana was apparently able use a stolen passport to flee to Thailand. Paul Cardwell was arrested in Thailand in June, over a year after disappearing after pleading not guilty to fraud charges in Wyoming. Cardwell had to surrender his own passport after being released on bond. Court documents filed by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa Leschuck say it appears that Cardwell used his brother-in-law's passport to board a flight from Chicago to Hong Kong last July. Cardwell allegedly told investigators that he stole it. Before fleeing, Cardwell tried to get a new passport under his birth name but his application was rejected. The passport office didn't notify investigators until over a month after he fled.
