The Abandoned Mine Lands Division of the Department of Environmental Quality contractors started drilling in downtown Rock Springs today (Monday) in an attempt to find dangerous mine shafts. The drilling will continue for 30 days. Rock Springs has a honeycomb of old coal mines running underneath and around the city. Those mines sometimes develop sink holes or cave ins. The state has offered compensation, but several homeowners said the offers were too low and filed suit against the state in July. They’re seeking about $6 million in AML money for repairs and to compensate homeowners for houses they say are unrecoverable.
