The Wyoming State Energy Office encourages residents to properly dispose of old appliances as they purchase new ones and to buy energy efficient models if possible.
“As we move into fall, it interestingly becomes a season for people to buy and dispose of refrigerators,” said Shannon Stanfill, Energy Office program manager. “We want to encourage people to consider energy efficient brands while they’re shopping and let them know that proper disposal of old appliances doesn’t have to be difficult. Many utilities and retailers offer pick up and disposal services.”
Stanfill said some utilities may also provide incentives for purchasing Energy Star appliances, which meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. Residents should check with their local utility for information.
Improvements in insulation and compressors means today's refrigerators use much less energy than older models. ENERGY STAR labeled refrigerators may also provide up to 20 percent more energy efficiency than minimum federal standards. A full list of ENERGY STAR products may be found online at Energystar.gov.
