A grizzly bear sow responsible for killing a California man in Yellowstone National Park this summer has been euthanized after its DNA matched that found near the site of another hiker killed in a bear attack. Michigan hiker John Wallace's body was found on Aug. 26th along the Mary Mountain Trail in Yellowstone. It was later determined he had been killed and partially eaten by a bear or bears.
DNA taken from bear hair and scat samples indicate the 250-pound, 6- to 7-year-old sow was present at the Mary Mountain Trail. The same bear was responsible for the death of hiker Brian Matayoshi during what was considered a defensive attack on July 6th on the Wapiti Lake Trail in Hayden Valley. The sow was captured on Wednesday and euthanized on Sunday. Her two cubs were captured Thursday and placed in the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center in West Yellowstone.
