Construction crews are putting the finishing touches on a new holding facility in western Wyoming that is part of a national program aimed at reforming juvenile justice. The facility in Adams Canyon is expected to serve as a staff-secured holding facility for juveniles making their way through the valley's courts, and to be a crisis shelter for at-risk youth. The national program called the Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative looks for options other than jail for minors who might not need to be locked up with other criminals. The two-bed facility also is expected to reduce the need for officers to drive juveniles to holding centers in St. Anthony, Idaho, or Lander, the two nearest options for those who get picked up in the middle of the night.
