Emancipation Day celebrates the emancipation of slaves of African origin and is widely recognized in most Caribbean countries. It is also celebrated in May in Florida and Mississippi, in August in Kentucky and is recognized as Juneteenth in many other states. It was declared a legal holiday in Washington DC in 2005.
