High Winds Forced Closure of 100 miles of I-80

High winds prompted Wyoming officials to close a 100-mile section of Interstate 80 between Laramie and Rawlins over the weekend. The National Weather Service reported gusts of up to 78 mph Saturday at Horse Creek, about 30 miles northwest of Cheyenne. The Wyoming Highway Patrol says several vehicles were blown over and some injuries were reported in wind-related accidents.. Sustained winds of up to 43 mph and gusts of up to 53 mph were reported in Rawlins. Light trailers were barred from much of I-80 from Rawlins to Rock Springs, about 100 miles. The ban extended to a 70-mile stretch of Interstate 25 from the Colorado border to Wheatland. Officials advised against unnecessary travel on I-25 north of Casper because of blowing and drifting snow.
