State limits groundwater drilling in Laramie County

The Wyoming State Engineer has restricted groundwater pumping in the eastern two-thirds of Laramie County. State Engineer Pat Tyrrell's order limits groundwater development for 18 months. He says the time will allow a reappraisal of the area's groundwater resource and its use. Under the order, wells drilled for domestic use and stock watering will be limited to one per subdivided lot, or no more than one per 10 acres, and limited to annual production of 1 acre foot of water. The order places other restrictions on miscellaneous use wells. Tyrrell says the order will still allow sufficient water for development of the Niobrara oil play. The State Engineer's Office plans a public meeting on the issue at 6 p.m., May 3, in Room B63 of the Herschler Building in Cheyenne.
