Gov. Matt Mead has no plans to make a political statement by shooting a wolf. Hunters killed two wolves in northwest Wyoming on Monday, the first day of Wyoming's first public hunt since wolves were reintroduced to the Yellowstone region in the 1990s. Mead enjoys hunting but said Tuesday he hasn't bought a wolf license yet. He says he might buy one "just to get one" but doesn't expect to have enough to free time to hunt wolves. The federal government removed wolves from endangered species protection last summer. Wyoming has sold more than 2,000 licenses to meet a quota of 52 wolves for this year's hunt. Wolves are classified as trophy game in northwest Wyoming and predators elsewhere in the state. The state trophy hunt continues through Dec. 31.
