Wyoming tribal member wins US pageant

A member of Wyoming's Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes has been crowned Miss Native American USA. Sarah Ortegon says she never prepared an acceptance speech because she didn't anticipate winning earlier this month in Tempe, Ariz. Ortegon was born in and lives in Denver and is a recent graduate of the Metropolitan State University of Denver where she received a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree. Ortegon competed against nine other contestants from across the United States. She says that she's looking forward to representing the title in the best way she can as she visits American Indian communities around the country. This was the first time Ortegon competed in a pageant. Participants were judged in traditional wear, evening wear, an interview and a talent.
