Detective Dick Blust Junior with the Sweetwater County Sheriff's office says that the death of 18 year old Vernon Leroy Johnson of Rock Springs, whose body was found north of Green River, is under investigation.
Sometime after 10:00 PM, Johnson lost control of his vehicle, a 1994 Oldsmobile, near Alkali Creek north of Green River and left the roadway, rolling 3 3/4 times. Blust says it is believed Johnson and the two girls were wearing their seat belts.
Sometime later, Johnson attempted to sleep while the girls remained awake. As the sun began to come up, the two tried to rouse Johnson and helped him to his feet, but he collapsed and could not be revived.
Christiansen notified officials shortly after he picked up the two girls, and a foot search for Johnson was launched that included deputies, a bloodhound, and firefighters from Sweetwater County Fire District #1, with an ambulance on standby. His body was found by Undersheriff Craig Jackson at around 10:00 AM..
No signs of foul play were detected, nor is alcohol believed to have been a factor.
