Gov. Matt Mead says he disagrees with a federal proposal to reduce the amount of public land in Wyoming available for possible oil shale development. Mead filed comments Friday with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Mead opposes the federal agency's plan to exclude oil shale development in areas that have wilderness characteristics and in areas of critical environmental concern. Mead says he believes that decisions about restricting mineral development in particular areas should be made in specific resource management plans that allow local involvement. The BLM proposes to offer about 460,000 acres of oil shale deposits for research and demonstration purposes in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. That's down from about 2 million acres under the Bush administration. The Wyoming Outdoor Council has filed comments supporting the BLM's new proposal.
