Latest Update on Fontenelle Fire

The Fontenelle Fire has burned 64,083 acres acres or 100 square miles on the Bridger-Teton National Forest, BLM High Desert District and State/Private Lands approximately 17 miles west of Big Piney. It is at 62% contained with 797 personnel on the scene.

Four Type I crews and one Type II initial attack crew are being utilized to construct direct line in difficult terrain. The crews should complete their mission in three to four days, thereby reducing the potential for the fire to be long in duration. The current plan of attack is to protect oil and gas infrastructure and structure protection in Middle Piney, Snider Basin, Clear Creek Guard Station, and communications site. The risk of fire damaging the gas wells and associated power line infrastructure is low, but fire activity directly adjacent to and near the wells has forced well operators to shut down at least 50 wells, causing significant economic impact to companies and area communities.

Local officials and fire managers will be sharing information about the fire and taking questions from the community at a public meeting. That meeting will take place tonight at 7 PM at the LDS Church located at 2266 Piney Road in Big Piney.

Road closures extend south from Bare Pass, west to N. Piney Meadows and Tri Basin Divide, south to Cheese Pass, Mount Isabel, and Red Park, east to the junction of LaBarge Creek Road, and north to Bare Pass along the forest boundary. Further closures may be needed to ensure firefighter and public safety. The public is asked to be cautious when driving on the Middle Piney and LaBarge roads between Hwy. 189 to the closure at the forest boundary as there may be fire traffic and limited vision due to smoke.
