Wyoming loses 164 seats in Head Start program

Wyoming has lost 164 seats for preschool children in the Head Start program because of mandatory federal budget cuts, and officials are bracing for the possibility of further reductions if more cuts hit in October. Head Start serves about 2,000 children statewide. The Laramie County program lost about 32 spots in Cheyenne. Sweetwater County lost 20 in Rock Springs and Green River. The Laramie County program also pushed back its starting date from the day after Labor Day to Sept. 16. In addition losing capacity, Head Start programs in Natrona, Campbell and Sweetwater counties had to trim the duration a program for children of families who are both working and going to school to nine months a year. It had been year-round.
