State Rep. Bob Nicholas, who was arrested in Florida last month after allegedly hitting his son, says he's innocent and will contest the charge in court. Lee County Sheriff's deputies in Florida arrested Nicholas in Boca Grande, Fla., on November 23rd for felony suspicion of abusing a disabled adult. Witnesses reported Nicholas hit his 19-year-old mentally disabled son with a closed fist, pushed him to the sidewalk and kicked him. Nicholas was released November 24th on $20,000 bail. A sheriff's report says Nicholas told deputies his son suffers seizures, has a mental condition similar to autism and became combative during lunch. He told deputies he was trying to get his son out of the restaurant and described his response as corporal punishment. Nicholas is set for arraignment on Dec. 27. He says he doesn't have to appear in person and adds he intends to fight the charge.
