Firefighters on Sunday battled a wildfire that blackened 6 square miles in Wyoming's Guernsey State Park and forced the evacuation of hundreds of campers and visitors, while crews contained about 70 percent of a fire that charred 13 square miles in nearby Medicine Bow National Park.
No injuries or structural damage were immediately reported from either fire.
Between 500 and 1,000 visitors were evacuated from the park when the blaze erupted Saturday, said Gary Schoene, spokesman for Wyoming State Parks. The cause was under investigation. Firefighters from the Wyoming Forestry Division were on the blaze, though resources were thin because of other wildfires in Wyoming and Colorado, Schoene said. "We are trying to make do with what we have," he said. The park is closed until further notice. Its high plains terrain includes rolling hills of sagebrush and some forest, Schoene said. Police escorted evacuees into the park early Sunday to retrieve their belongings and recreational vehicles, The Glenrock Bird reported. Authorities opened a shelter for evacuees at a 4-H building in Wheatland, about 65 miles north of Cheyenne.
