BLM Issues Decision on Mesa Habitat Improvement Project

The Bureau of Land Management Pinedale Field Office has issued the finding of no significant impact and decision record for the Pinedale Anticline Project Office’s Mesa Habitat Improvement Project environmental assessment. The DR approves drilling a water well, installing associated well facilities, and constructing a five acre exclosure to provide a green space from water trough overflow for wildlife. The project is located approximately 13 miles south of Pinedale in the Pinedale Anticline Project Area. Construction will take place in compliance with wildlife stipulations.

In 2011, reclamation monitoring documented heavy grazing in reclaimed areas by both livestock and wildlife. The water well is designed to draw grazing in the Mesa Common Allotment away from the PAPA Core Development Area. This will reduce grazing pressure on reclaimed areas, support successful reclamation and increase the potential for a functioning habitat for Greater Sage-Grouse and other wildlife.
