The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment on a new uranium mine proposed for Fremont County. The BLM held a public meeting on the Cameco uranium mine on Riverton on Tuesday. Another was planned Wednesday evening in Lander. Cameco is planning to do in-situ mining, in which uranium is extracted by dissolving minerals underground. The uranium-bearing water is then pumped to the surface. The BLM is looking at three plans and considering how to limit the surface disturbance and reduce vegetation loss. The agency is also looking at how the mine would affect previous reclamation efforts, livestock grazing and air and water quality. The BLM will accept comments through Jan. 31.
