UW center will lead literacy education, research

The University of Wyoming will become a hub for promoting literacy statewide. Wyoming first lady Carol Mead joined UW officials Monday in announcing that a campaign to raise money for a new Literacy Research Center and Clinic at the university has succeeded. The campaign raised $3.8 million in private and state matching money to renovate the UW College of Education Annex Building in Laramie to serve as the center. UW President Tom Buchanan says the center will enhance the university's literacy program. Mead has been active in children's issues, noting that she struggled with literacy issues as a child. Mead says literacy is a key to helping Wyoming's children read and get a successful education. The center will offer professional development for teachers, research on literacy and other services.
