Wyo. feedground encroached on wilderness area

Officials say a state-run feedground in northwest Wyoming for a time intruded on the Gros Ventre (GROW' vawnt) Wilderness area. After the U.S. Forest Service surveyed the site in 2009, the Alkali Creek feedground's size was reduced by 14 acres. The feedground is now 91 acres, but is up for review as the state seeks a permit to operate it for 20 years. The Forest Service is accepting comments on the proposal to reauthorize the feedground until May 23. Forest Service spokeswoman Mary Cernicek says that while the feedground no longer intrudes on the wilderness area, the Forest Service will examine any impacts the feeding elk have on vegetation in the adjacent wilderness.
