Rain misses Cow Camp Fire in SE Wyoming

Heavy rain that fell on areas of southeast Wyoming missed a 3,500-acre wildfire burning in the Medicine Bow National Forest.

But Forest Service spokesman Aaron Voos says the storms were close enough Wednesday that the fire was buffeted by gusty winds that didn't help firefighters.

He says the forecast Thursday is for cooler temperatures and higher humidity, which are helpful to the firefighting effort.

The fire is burning about 20 miles northwest of Wheatland and about 5 miles southeast of Laramie Peak in an area of rugged terrain mixed with ponderosa pine, brush and grass. Lightning is suspected of starting the fire late Sunday. It was 10% contained.

Elsewhere, firefighters have gained about 20% containment on a fire burning in Weston County in northeast Wyoming.
